- Severe NAND Flash Wear (SSD): The 24GB/32GB Samsung modules (
SM0032L/AP0032M) experience extremely high Write Amplification Factors. Because the drive is constantly cycling files out of its tiny storage cell array to make room for active tasks, it burns through its limited NAND write cycles much faster than a standard 128GB or 256GB drive. Once the cells wear out, the SSD suffers catastrophic block exhaustion and goes dark on the PCIe bus. - Thermal Slowdowns & Kernel Panics: Even if the Fusion drive is separated by software, a failing NVMe module remaining active on the iMac's motherboard can leak errors into the system, generating continuous kernel panics and random reboots even when trying to operate from an external boot drive.
