Bad Sectors and Read/Write Errors

The Mechanism
Over time, hard drives develop microscopic surface defects known as "bad sectors." In a standard single-drive environment, the drive's firmware detects a failing sector and transparently reallocates the data to a healthy spare sector.
The Impact on RAID 0
In a RAID 0 array, if a single drive encounters an unreadable bad sector during a heavy read operation or a system boot, the entire array can "drop" the drive. The RAID controller interprets the drive's delayed response or read timeout as a complete hardware disconnect. The array status changes to "Failed" or "Offline," instantly halting system operations and risking severe file system corruption.
